Inflammation

Inflammation is a sophisticated strategy of the human immune system. So the body heals every skin injury by inflammation for example. During the healing process, the wound is reddened, a little swollen and perhaps a warmed. When the wound has healed, the immune system stops the inflammation. It is essential that the inflammatory process is timely limited ("resolution"). However, if the immune system has failed, it leads to the development of a chronic inflammatory disease. The joints, the intestines, the lungs and the skin, which represent the inner and outer surfaces of the body, are most frequently affected by chronic inflammation.

The Game

INFLAMMANIA - The Inflammation Game is a learning game in which the user fights against inflammation in chronic diseases. Immerse into the fascinating world of the body’s own defence and play through various molecular inflammatory mechanisms in organs, joints, intestines and lungs. Get to know the “good” and “evil” of the immune system and and take medications to support it against inflammation. In this “Tower Defence” you have to develop a good strategy to take control of the inflammation. Cleverly position your neutrophil granulocytes, so that they can throw their Nets at the invading uric acid crystals during a gout attack. Later, you can stop an asthmatic attack through targeted use of antibodies in the lungs. Become a doctor yourself and treat chronic inflammatory diseases like gout, asthma, Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Serious Game was developed for pupils, students, patients and all people interested in medicine. At the end of the game, the players have learned what happens on a molecular level in their bodies during a chronic inflammatory disease: how the prescribed drugs work and how one can change one's lifestyle in order to reduce the disease or inflammatory activity. The playful acquisition of knowledge can inspire and motivate people to change their behavior and to inspire enthusiasm for life sciences. This is intended to raise awareness of early diagnosis of chronic inflammatory diseases in order to improve the success of therapy long-term.

The Project

The digital learning game INFLAMMANIA – The Inflammation Game was developed within the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1181 “Checkpoints for Resolution of Inflammation” at University Hospital Erlangen. The interdisciplinary research project aims to characterize the molecular mechanisms that control the resolution of inflammation in order to better understand the nature of chronicity of human inflammatory diseases. The scientific results obtained within the CRC1181 will be transferred strongly simplified into the game. www.sfb1181.forschung.fau.eu

Awards

The digital learning game INFLAMMIA – The Inflammation Game was awarded 2nd place by the German children’s software award TOMMI in 2018 in the category PC-games. The children’s jury says the following: INFLAMMANIA wins the second price at TOMMI in the category PC-games, because we had to defend the human body against diseases. We travel through the human body to cure people. During that, we became doctors that helped the patient with antibodies. In lung and intestines the action began. However, there was a considerable challenge, and we needed tactics to succeed. In the game you are one of the good guys, and we were truly inspired to become doctors ourselves. For we have learned a lot thanks to all the information. Source:www.kindersoftwarepreis.de

INFLAMMANIA - The Inflammation Game is nominated for the Golden Spatz 2019, recently. The Inflammation Game "INFLAMMANIA - Fight for Cure" has been invited to the "Competition Digital - Knowledge & Learning to Touch and Try" in the context of the German Children's Media Festival from June 2 to 8, 2018 in Gera and Erfurt. www.goldenerspatz.de
